More Responsibility Requires More Capacity
Building your ability to lead people and manage tasks
Being good at your job often leads to more responsibility. You become the person others depend on, the one who keeps projects moving and knows what needs to happen next.
Then you’re asked to supervise a team.
Now your success includes more than completing your own work. You’re responsible for communicating expectations, supporting people, addressing concerns, and making sure the work gets done.
That transition requires you to build and expand your capacity.
What Does Capacity Look Like?
Your capacity to lead includes your skills, judgment, time, and ability to respond thoughtfully to the needs of your team.
Expanding that capacity may mean learning to delegate, becoming more comfortable with difficult conversations, or recognizing when someone needs coaching rather than another instruction. It also means understanding your own limits and identifying the support you need.
Consider this: If every decision, problem, and assignment must come back to you, how much room do you have to lead?
Lead People With Care and Clarity
People bring different strengths, experiences, and needs to their work. Two team members may receive the same assignment and need different kinds of support to complete it successfully.
One may need clarity about the expected outcome. Another may understand the assignment but need resources, encouragement, or an opportunity to develop a skill.
As a leader, I would ask my team, “What do you need from me to support you in this project?”
Never be afraid to ask that question.
Sometimes folks already know what to do. They need your support as they work through a challenge. Even when resources are limited, you can create space to think through other ways to move forward.
That is where, the framework, Care. Connect. Coach.™ becomes practical.
Show people you care about their success. Connect through listening and meaningful conversation. Then coach them to think, make decisions, and strengthen their skills.
Trust grows when your team experiences both your support and your willingness to hold clear expectations.
Manage Tasks With Clear Agreements
A task can sound clear when you assign it and still leave room for different interpretations.
Before the work begins, make sure you and the person responsible share an understanding of:
The outcome you want to achieve.
Who owns the task and what decisions they can make.
The resources and support available.
The deadline and opportunities to check progress.
These conversations give people a stronger foundation for taking ownership. They also give you a useful point of reference when something needs to change.
If an assignment falls behind, you can explore what happened. Was the timeframe realistic? Did priorities shift? Was a decision needed? Did the person encounter a gap in knowledge or resources?
Your response becomes more useful when you understand the situation.
Build Capacity Through Delegation
Delegation is an opportunity to develop people while creating room for you to lead.
Begin with a responsibility that fits the person’s current abilities and gives them an opportunity to grow. Explain the expected outcome, agree on check-ins, and clarify when they should bring a concern to you.
Then allow them room to work.
When leaders step in too quickly, they can unintentionally limit opportunities for others to practice judgment and solve problems. Thoughtful coaching allows someone to learn while still having access to support.
Over time, that development strengthens the capacity of the whole team.
Keep Developing Yourself
Experience gives you valuable insight. Continued development gives you opportunities to examine your habits, practice new approaches, and respond to changing responsibilities.
Ask yourself: Where am I creating clarity? Where am I becoming a bottleneck? Which conversations am I avoiding? What skill would make me more effective in this season?
Your team’s growth and your own development are connected. As you strengthen your ability to lead, you become better equipped to support their success.
There is always room to Reach For Better.
